India has successfully tested a nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile in the Bay of Bengal, launching the missile from India's first indigenously built nuclear-powered submarine.

The successful test means that India has joined a small group of countries with the capacity to launch missile strikes and counter-missile strikes on land, sea and air.

India's Defense Ministry said in a statement on Friday, October 14, that the launch was evidence of the "competence of the crew" and the ballistic missile capability of the Indian submarines, "an essential component of India's nuclear deterrent capability".

The successful launch of the submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) also underlined India's drive to build its own military.

Last September, India launched its first indigenously built aircraft carrier, the INS Vikrant, which was heralded as a milestone in efforts to counter China's growing military influence in the region.

The INS Vikrant is one of the largest naval vessels in the world, with a length of 262 metres, and entered service after 17 years of construction and testing.

The Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled the first batch of Indian-made attack helicopters, which are designed for use in high altitude areas such as the Himalayas where their forces clashed with China in 2020.

India is one of the world's largest arms importers and is trying to boost its arms industry domestically as the country continues to rely heavily on arms from Russia, its largest and oldest military supplier in decades.

This may raise tension in the region and the Indian Ocean. India is experiencing border disputes with nuclear-armed Pakistan and China, and has fought a number of wars, especially in the Kashmir region.
