Meta
Meta

A year ago, before Facebook went dead, the social media company had a market capitalization of $1 trillion, putting it in rare privileged territory with a handful of US tech giants.

Today the scene looks much different. Meta has lost about two-thirds of its value since it peaked in September 2021. The stock is trading at its lowest level since January of 2019.

It is about to end its third consecutive quarter with losses of more than 10%. Only 4 stocks in the S&P 500 are going through a worst-than-meta year.

Facebook's business model is built on network effects, users invite their friends and family, who tell their colleagues, who invite their friends. Suddenly everyone gathered in one place.

Advertisers followed, and the company's plentiful profits following the success of the previous model provided the capital to hire the best and most skilled engineers to keep the social network running.

Users leave the network and advertisers cut back on their spending, hurting Meta as it prepares to report its second consecutive decline in quarterly revenue.

Internet sites started removing the Facebook login icon from their pages (which was widespread) after the network became less important.

Attracting new engineers to the company has become a new challenge, especially since founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg spends most of his time advocating its new world, Metaverse, which may be the company's future but none of its near-term revenue and costing billions of dollars to build annually.

Dream metaverse or delusion

Zuckerberg said he hopes that over the next decade the Metaverse network will reach “a billion people” and “host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce.”

He told CNBC reporter Jim Kramer last June that a "new star" would reach those kinds of numbers by the end of the decade and create a "massive economy" around digital goods.

Investors aren't excited about it, and the way they're dumping stocks makes some observers wonder whether the downward pressure is actually a death spiral from which Meta can't recover.

Nobody expects Facebook to be in danger of bankruptcy. The company still holds a dominant position in mobile advertising and has one of the most profitable business models on the planet.

Even with net income down 36% in the last quarter of the prior year, Meta generated $6.7 billion in profits and closed the period with more than $40 billion in cash and marketable securities.

Is the success story over?

The problem with the US stock market with Facebook is that it is no longer a growth story, and until 2021, that is the only thing known about the network.

The slowest year for revenue growth for the company was 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, as the company continued to expand by 22%.

The number of daily active users in the United States and Canada has fallen in the past two years, from 198 million in the middle of 2020 to 197 million in the second quarter of this year.

Globally, user numbers are up about 10% and are expected to increase by 3% annually through 2024, according to FactSet estimates.

Where will future generations go?

“I don't see Facebook going up in terms of cash flow in the next few years, but I'm just concerned that they won't win the next generation," said Jeremy Bundy, CEO of app marketing firm Liftoff.

The next generation, as Bundy describes it, is now moving to TikTok, where users can create and watch viral short videos, rather than watching the rants about past political events shared by distant relatives they have mistakenly linked to on Facebook.

Meta is trying to imitate the success of Tik Tok by showing the short video called Reels, which has been a huge focus across Facebook and Instagram.

Can Meta compete with Tik Tok?

Meta plans to increase the amount of short videos filtered by Instagram feeds algorithms to users from 15% to 30%, and Bundy predicts that the company will likely get a “significant revenue stream from this change in algorithms.”

However, Facebook acknowledges that it is still too early to monetize Reels, and it is not yet clear how much the technology will be able to attract advertisers.

Sheryl Sandberg, who left the company on Friday, September 30 after more than 14 years as chief operating officer, said last July that videos are harder than photos.

And in terms of measuring the extent of advertising success, and that Facebook should show companies how to use advertising tools with “Rails” technology.
