Starting next year, Apple will abide by EU laws by replacing old chargers with a USB-C charger — by removing the old iPhone's charger port to a Type-C port.

According to Bloomberg, Apple's chief marketing officer, Greg Joswiak, said the company will adopt the change in its chargers before European law takes effect in 2024.

Joswiak said the company will comply as it does with other laws. He declined to say when the iPhone would get the charger to replace the Lightning charger. He made the remarks at the Wall Street Journal conference in Laguna Beach, California.

He said that Apple and the European Union had been at odds over chargers for 10 years, recalling how European authorities once wanted Apple to adopt Micro-USB technology.

He said that neither the current Lightning iPhone charging port, nor the now ubiquitous USB-C would have been invented if that switch had occurred.

Analysts announced a while ago that iPhones slated for release in 2023 could come with USB-C charging and that Apple will likely introduce the standard globally, not just in the European Union.

EU lawmakers maintain that the rules will reduce waste because consumers do not need to buy a new charger every time they buy a new mobile. The European Union said this would reduce production and phase out new chargers.

Joswiak criticized the European Union for passing a law to standardize chargers for all types of mobile phones in the European Union, acknowledging that the two sides were in a "minor disagreement".

"We believe the approach would have been better from an environmental point of view and better for our customers if there had been no compulsion from the European Union," he said.
