Do smartphones really help us do more of our daily lives, or do we really suffer from “digital amnesia”?

The specific effects of smartphone use on nearly most everyday tasks have been manifested in our brains, their ability to retrieve information, and their ability to keep track of all the data we try to store in the brain, according to neuroscientists and researchers.

Some say that a number of smartphone features that help users remember static data, such as phone numbers, appointments, etc., leave space in the brain for use in other cognitive functions.

Yet another team argues that the slope is more slippery, warning that the less we rely on our brains, the weaker they become, and that outsourcing certain brain functions is in fact changing the physical makeup of what is arguably our most important organ.

Ideas and the brain

It's only become a digital process over the years, and before the technology that brought us smartphones and computers, before humans usually jotted down their thoughts and the things they wanted to remember, from shopping and grocery lists.

Doctors and bank appointments, or reminders to call someone back, use pen and paper, according to neuroscientist Dr. Chris Breed.

Thus, this particular process of “downloading” thoughts and memories from our brains into “external storage” is not new and could in fact provide more brain power and space for other functions such as focus and creativity.

approach risks

"Once you stop using your memory, it will get worse, which will make you use your device more," Hard told The Guardian.

A 2005 University of Waterloo study supports this hypothesis, as researchers found that over-reliance on smartphones to properly retrieve information is linked to "lazy thinking".

This suggests that there is indeed a link between "heavy smartphone use and poor intelligence", although there is no clear causal relationship yet.

brain delegation

Although simply using the appropriate features on our phones to remember things like the ingredients of a cooking recipe or the location of the car in the garage of a mall doesn't have to do much damage to our memory capacity, evidence is emerging that over-reliance may begin to alter the physiological structure of the brain.

It is likely that this effect will result from relying on phones to perform more complex tasks such as geo-mapping (using Google Maps all the time).

Although using a GPS to guide you to entirely new destinations isn't the end of the world for your brain's gray matter, it's better for your health to participate in spatial behavior in geographic mapping.

Forgetting and memory

Beyond the everyday nuance of forgetting a task from your to-do list, neuroscientists fear that our over-reliance on smartphones will lead to an increase in degenerative brain disease.

Another study on cognitive development in adolescents indicated that young children who were more exposed to technology (such as smartphones and tablets) had more thinning of the cerebral cortex.

It is a process that is supposed to occur with age as part of the normal degeneration process with age, as thinning of the cortex is associated with degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and dementia.
