A Yemeni security official told Agence France-Presse that "a weapons store located under a residential building exploded in mysterious circumstances" in the city of Lawdar in the Abyan governorate, southern Yemen.

weapons in yemen

Weapons are widely spread in Yemen and among members of society, and the city of Lauder in the south of the country includes an arms market that sells various light and medium weapons.

Yemen, the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula, has been witnessing a war since 2014 between pro-government forces and Houthi rebels who control much of the north of the country, especially the capital, Sanaa.

The Houthis are backed by Iran, while a Saudi-led military coalition since 2015 has supported pro-government forces.

The war in Yemen

This war in Yemen has caused the death of more than 377,000 people directly or indirectly, according to the United Nations, meaning that they died either in bombing and fighting, or as a result of the indirect repercussions of the war, such as hunger, disease and lack of drinking water.

Another source told Reuters that the fall of this large number of victims came as a result of dozens of citizens racing towards the warehouse or warehouse.

Before it exploded again, which also caused severe damage to the neighboring residential buildings, eyewitnesses stated that damage was caused to the buildings adjacent to the store.
