Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great

Macedonian conqueror, leader, and king Alexander the Great was born on July 20, 356 BC, in the Pella region of the ancient Greek kingdom called Macedonia.

During his reign between 336 and 323 BC, he united the independent Greek cities and led the League of Corinth. He also became king of Persia, Babylon and Asia and established Macedonian colonies in the Middle East.

Alexander the Great died in Babylon (present-day Iraq) on June 13, 323 BC, of malaria while contemplating the conquest of Carthage and Rome.

the start

Alexander the Great was born in the region of Pella in the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedonia on June 20, 356 BC to his parents, King Philip II of Macedonia and Queen Olympia, daughter of King Neoptelemus.

The prince and his sister had grown up in the royal court of Bella, and throughout his youth Alexander, with dark eyes and curly hair, saw his father little, as his father was preoccupied most of his time with military campaigns and extramarital sex, and although Olympia was setting an example for her son in strength, However, Alexander resented his father's absence and extramarital relations.

Education and equestrian

Alexander the Great received his early education under the tutelage of his close relative Leonidas, ruler of Eberus. Leonidas, appointed by King Philip to teach his son mathematics, horsemanship, and archery, made a great effort to control his rebellious pupil.

Alexander's next teacher was Lysimachus, who used role-playing to get the attention of the restless boy, and who delighted Alexander precisely in his role as the warrior Achilles.

In 343 BC, King Philip II appointed the philosopher Aristotle to teach Alexander at the Temple of the Nymphs in Mesa. Aristotle worked for three years in teaching Alexander and some of his friends the sciences of philosophy, poetry, theater, science and politics.

When Aristotle saw that Homer's Iliad had inspired Alexander to dream of becoming a legendary warrior, he created an abridged version of the book for him to take with him on military campaigns.

personal life

Alexander married the Persian princess Roxana, and lived a turbulent life with her. Historians narrate about Alexander's many relationships with women, and some say that he was also homosexual towards Hephaestion's girlfriend.

Many researchers believe that Hephaestion's death is the reason for the deterioration of Alexander the Great's health and marital relationship, and Roxana gave birth to a son from him five months after his death, who bore the name Alexander IV.

amazing facts

He was tutored by the famous philosopher Aristotle, and during 15 years of conquest and war, Alexander received no defeat.

He gave his name to more than 70 cities around the world, and was greatly influenced by Persian culture. After defeating the Persian armies, Alexander wore clothes similar to Persian clothes.

The cause of his death remains one of the most important mysteries in the history of the ancient world, despite the rumors of his death from malaria.

The most famous sayings of Alexander the Great

I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep. I fear an army of sheep led by a lion

The death of Alexander the Great

Alexander died of malaria in the region of Babylon (present-day Iraq) in June 323 BC, while contemplating the conquest of Carthage and Rome, when he was still 32 years old, and Roxana bore him a son a few months later.

After the death of Alexander, his empire collapsed and the nations that made up it began to fight for power, and with the passage of time the cultures of Greece and the East coalesced to flourish as relics of Alexander's empire and become part of the legacy and spread the spirit of pan-Hellenicism.

Alexander's achievements

Alexander completed his education at Mesa in 340 BC, and a year later, while still a teenager, became a soldier and embarked on his first military expedition against the Thracian tribes. In 338 BC Alexander became responsible for the accompanying cavalry and helped his father defeat the Athenian and Theban armies at Chaeronea.

As soon as Philip II succeeded in his campaign to unite all the Greek cities (except Sparta) in the League of Corinth, the relationship between father and son was cut off, after which Philip married Cleopatra Eurydice, cousin of the commander Attalus and expelled Olympia, Alexander's mother, Alexander and Olympia were forced to flee from Macedonia and stay with the family Olympia in Epirus until Alexander and King Philip II were able to resolve their differences.

Marriage and war

In the year 336, Alexander's sister married the king of Molossia, and her uncle was also called Alexander, and during the celebration that followed the wedding, King Philip II was killed by the Macedonian nobleman Pausanius. Following the death of his father, Alexander, then 19, decided to seize power by any means.

He quickly gained the support of the Macedonian army with its leaders and squads who fought with it in Chaeronea. The army installed Alexander as a feudal king, and continued to help him kill any potential heirs to the throne, even his faithful mother Olympia secured her son's access to power by killing the daughter of King Philip II and Cleopatra He pushed Cleopatra to commit suicide.

Although Alexander was the feudal king of Macedonia, he did not obtain automatic power from the League of Corinth. In fact, the southern cities were happy with the death of Philip II and expressed their interest in dispersing again, while Athens had its own agenda; Under the leadership of Democrat Demosthenes, the city hoped to become responsible for the League.

independence movement

Following the start of the independence movements, Alexander sent his army south, and forced the region of Thessaly to recognize him as the leader of the League of Corinth, and then during a meeting of the members of the League at Thermopylae, Alexander extracted their consent to his leadership. M. With the fall of 336 BC.

He rewrote the treaties with the Greek cities that were part of the League of Corinth, although Athens was still against his leadership, and was granted complete military authority in his campaign against the Persian Empire, but before preparing for war with Persia, Alexander first defeated the Thracian Tribalians in 335 to secure the northern frontier of Macedonia .

As Alexander was nearing the end of his campaign in the north, he received news that the Greek city of Thebes had defeated the Macedonian forces that were holed up there.

Alexander hastened to move his huge army of 3,000 cavalry and 30,000 infantry south to the head of the Greek peninsula, in anticipation of any revolt in the other cities, while Alexander's commander Parmenion was on his way to Asia Minor.

Athens

Alexander arrived with his forces in Thebes so quickly that the city did not have the opportunity to gather its allies to defend it, and three days after his arrival Alexander led the massacre of Thebes.

Alexander had hoped that the destruction of Thebes would serve as a warning to other cities contemplating revolt, and his plan of intimidation proved effective as Greek cities, including Athens, chose to stick to their alliance with the Macedonian Empire or preferred to remain neutral.

Asia

In the year 334 BC. AD, Alexander began his expedition to Asia, arriving in the spring in Troy, after which he encountered the army of the Persian king Darius III near the Granicus River, where Darius' forces were quickly defeated. By autumn Alexander and his army had crossed the southern coast of Asia Minor to Gordium, where they spent the winter resting.

In the summer of 333, the forces of Alexander and Darius met again at the Battle of Issus, and although Darius' army was outnumbered, Alexander took advantage of his tendency to devise military tactics to create a formation that defeated the Persians again and caused Darius to flee. In November 333 Alexander proclaimed himself King of Persia after capturing Darius and making him a fugitive.

Egypt

The next campaign was the capture of Egypt, and after besieging Gaza on his way to Egypt, he was able to seize it easily as Egypt fell without any resistance. And in the year 331 BC. AD, he established the city of Alexandria as it was established to be a center of Greek culture and trade.

Then, in the same year, Alexander defeated the Persians in the Battle of Gogamela, and with the collapse of the Persian army, Alexander became "the king of Babylon, the king of Asia, and the king of the four quarters of the world."

eastern Iran

Alexander's next target was eastern Iran, where he established Macedonian colonies. In 327 he captured a fortress at Aramisez, and after capturing Prince Oxarius, Alexander married his daughter Roxana.

In the year 238, Alexander defeated the armies of King Poros in northern India, and when Alexander found himself admired by Poros, he reappointed him as king and won his loyalty and pardon, then headed east to the Ganges River, but he returned after his army refused to advance further. On the way back to the Indus, Alexander was wounded by Malian fighters.

In 325 BC, after Alexander was cured, he headed north with his army along the harsh Persian Gulf, where many fell to disease, injury and death. In February 324 Alexander finally reached Shushan.

nobles links

Desperate to maintain his leadership spirit and employ more soldiers, he attempted to establish ties between the Persian and Macedonian nobles with the aim of creating a ruling class, and to this end he ordered in Shushan to marry a large number of Macedonians to Persian princesses. After his success in using tens of thousands of Persian soldiers in his army, he released many of his Macedonian soldiers.

Which increased the number of soldiers who were criticizing Alexander’s new soldiers and objecting to his adoption of Persian customs and traditions, so in order to calm the Macedonian soldiers, Alexander killed 13 Persian military leaders, and thus the celebration in Shushan, which was aimed at documenting the ties between the Persians and the Macedonians, turned to the exact opposite.
