Profit from the Internet

Profit from the Internet
Profit from the Internet

The details of what any person searches for or sees by browsing the sites on the Internet is very important for some companies, as it is an important source for making billions of dollars.

This data helps successive companies like Google and Facebook earn many billions of dollars a year in advertising revenue, as they use the information they collect to target us with ads.

e-shops

For example, if you are browsing the websites of online fashion stores and you are thinking of buying a new pair of jeans, it is assumed that within a short period you will see ads for jeans appear on your computer screen while browsing a different website, which is something that happens to all of us whenever we think about Buy something online.

That we are so vulnerable to being tracked as we use the internet in this way is a little worrisome. A recent study showed that data about the average European person's use of the Internet is shared 376 times a day, and that number almost doubles for US surfers, reaching 747 times.

Use of information

The data logged to surfers is called Real-Time Bidding (RTB) and it's a behind-the-scenes process on websites and apps. It keeps track of what you're looking at, no matter how private or sensitive it is, and records the locations and places you go.

Every day companies broadcast this data about you to a group of companies on an ongoing basis, and this enables them to build a personal profile about you. This data is bought and sold to advertisers and to companies that run ad engines such as Google and Facebook.

Sell your information

This information is the largest data breach ever recorded. It tracks and shares what people view online and their real location 294 billion times in the US and 197 billion times in Europe every day.

But what if you could not only have more control over how much of your data is shared, but make money from it as well?

That's the promise of a Canadian tech company called Surf, which last year launched a browser affiliate of the same name, rewarding users for surfing the Internet.

new browser

This browser is still in beta or limited release phase in the US and Canada, and it works by bypassing data-tracking companies like Google, and selling your data directly to brands. In return, SURF gives you points that can be collected and redeemed for gift cards from stores and get discounts.

Among the trademarks that have registered in this browser so far are "Foot Locker", "The Body Shop", "Crocs" and "Dyson".

Surf ensures that all the data it collects is anonymous, email addresses and phone numbers are not shared, and the subscriber does not have to mention his name when registering. However, he does ask about his age, gender and approximate residential address, but this information is not mandatory.

Trademarks

The idea is that brands can use the data that SURF provides in their ads. For example, a brand can see which internet sites are most popular among men aged 18-24 living in Los Angeles. Then it can target this segment with its ads accordingly.

Surf has not released details of how much users can earn, but says it has so far enabled users to earn more than $1.2 million.

People can also use Serv to limit the data they share when they use the Internet, such as by blocking information about certain websites they visit.

Students' opinions

Amina Al-Nour, a student at York University in Toronto, Canada and a user of SURF, says that she feels that this sub-browser has given her the ability to “control” her data on the Internet.

"Sometimes I forget that I'm using the browser, and after a week I check my history there, to find that my score continues to rise," she says.

“All digital technology companies will collect our information, but the goal is to make our experiences using technology better, right,” Amina continues.

Swish Goshami, co-founder and CEO of SURF, says the company seeks to be the 'Frequent Flyer Rewards Program for surfing the web'.

"We've been clear with users from day one about what we share and don't share, and we've given them the ability to control their data as well."

the world of technology

“I think if you are honest with people, and you tell them that you share data with brands, and that you do it while maintaining anonymity, noting that no one can refer to them because we basically do not know the first or last name of the subscriber, then people are More relaxed saying 'yes' and sharing more with us."

Serv is part of a new growing movement in the world of digital technology, which some have called "responsible technology", part of which is to give people more control over their data.

Another technology company working in this field is Canadian startup Waverly, which allows people to browse their own news, rather than relying on Google News and Apple News tracking and ad-based algorithms.

Artificial intelligence

Waverly users can choose and categorize topics they are interested in, and the company's artificial intelligence software finds articles they think they want to read.

Waverly users can change their preferences regularly, and send feedback on articles suggested to them.

Baudouin says users have to put in some effort, as they have to tell the app what things they care about, but in return they are freed from being "trapped by ads".

"Responsible technology should empower users, but it also shouldn't be shy about asking them to do some work for themselves," he adds. "[In return] our AI software reads thousands of articles a day and puts them in an index."

corporate control

As for the American company Abine, which is owned by Rob Schaeffel, it makes two applications that enable the user to raise the level of privacy protection when using the Internet, which are Blur “Blair” and “Delete Me”, and the first ensures that your passwords and payment details cannot be traced, The second removes your personal information from search engines.

Carissa Velez, associate professor at the University of Oxford's Institute of Artificial Intelligence Ethics, says tech companies need to "be motivated to develop business models that do not rely on the exploitation of personal data".

“It is worrying that most of the algorithms that control our lives are produced by private companies without any kind of oversight or direction to ensure that these algorithms support public utility and values,” Karissa adds.

money makers

"I don't think transparency is a panacea, or even half a solution," she says, "but policymakers in particular should have access to these algorithms."

Google refers to its new Privacy Sandbox initiative, which "aims to provide new, more privacy-preserving advertising solutions."

"That's why we're collaborating with regulators and the web community to create technologies through Privacy Sandbox that will protect the privacy of Internet users while helping to keep access to content and access to online services free for all," a Google spokesperson says.

Later this year, we will launch a My Ad Center that will expand our privacy controls to give users more direct control over their information that is used to display ads to them.
