On Tuesday, June 7, European lawmakers approved the text of a proposed European Union law that would impose a uniform type of charger for mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold within the bloc by 2024, in a blow to the American company Apple.

The political intervention, which the European Commission said would make life easier for consumers and save them money, came after companies failed to find a common solution.

Charger Consolidation

The city of Brussels has been pushing for a unified mobile charger for more than a decade, prompted by complaints from users of iPhones and Android devices about having to switch between different chargers for their devices.

iPhones are charged with a Lightning cable, while Android devices use USB-C (USB-C) connectors.

"By the autumn of 2024, USB-C will become the common charging port for all mobiles, tablets and cameras in the European Union," the European Parliament said in a statement.

European Union

The EU's Internal Markets Commissioner, Thierry Breton, said the deal would save about 250 million euros to consumers, and reduce about 11,000 tons of e-waste annually.

"This will also allow new technologies, such as wireless charging, to emerge and evolve without allowing innovation to become a source of market segmentation and consumer annoyance," he said.

"We are proud that the proposal included laptops, e-readers, earphones, keyboards, computer mice and portable navigation devices," said Representative Alex Agios Saliba, who led the debate on the proposal in Parliament.

Apple experiments

And that this deal will also cover e-readers, earphones and other technologies that will affect Samsung, Huawei, and other device makers.

And previous reports stated that Apple is already testing iPhones that will use the USB-C port, instead of the traditional Lightning port known to users of Apple devices.

European Commission decision

European lawmakers approved the standardized charger on a proposal made by the European Union's Executive Committee - the European Commission - last September, but it came more than a decade later, prompting the European Parliament to ignore it for the first time.

The decision will be formally ratified by the European Parliament and EU member states later this year 2022.

The European Union is made up of 27 countries with a population of 450 million, and with some of the world's richest consumers, the imposition of USB-C as a standard charger device could affect the entire global market.
