Pig Heart Transplant |

In a historic precedent from the world of medicine and operations, surgeons from the University of Maryland College of Medicine succeeded in transplanting a genetically modified pig’s heart into a patient suffering from a failure in the functions of the heart muscles.

She explained in a statement from the College of Medicine: The surgery, which was carried out last Friday, demonstrated for the first time that the heart of an animal can live in a human body without immediate rejection.

The American patient, David Bennett (57 years), agreed to perform the operation, after he had received 10 years ago a heart valve from a pig also after exhausting other treatments.

The Food and Drug Administration gave immediate permission to perform this surgery on New Year's Eve, as a final step for a patient deemed ineligible for a human heart transplant.

On the night of the operation, patient Bennett said: “Either I die, or I have this transplant. I want to live. It is my last option.”

Here, the American surgeon "Bartley Griffiths", who performed the operation, said that this operation is a pioneering operation and brings us one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis, and added: "We are proceeding with caution, but we are also optimistic that this surgery will provide an important new option for patients in the future."

In the same context, a group of doctors in the United States of America announced last Friday the success of the transplantation of a genetically modified pig heart in the body of an American citizen, in a precedent that is the first of its kind in the history of medicine.

The medical school explained that this operation is the last hope to save the life of the American Bennett, although it was not clear what chance of survival.

And in the long-term and the effectiveness of a genetically modified heart transplant, Bennett said before the surgery: "Either I die or have this operation, it is my last option."

The future of heart transplantation

The American surgeon, Bartley Griffiths, who performed the surgery, explained: “This is a ground-breaking surgical procedure and brings the field of medicine a significant step forward.

It is solving the global organ shortage crisis,” adding that the medical world is progressing slowly, and is working to provide the best option for patients in the future.

The French news agency AFP said the pig used in the heart transplant had been genetically modified to produce a gene that would trigger an immune response in humans.
