Turkey is in a currency crisis as investors dump the lira in response to the country's central bank's extraordinary decision to cut interest rates in the face of spiraling inflation.

In the context of a series of fleeing the country against the backdrop of the crisis facing the exchange market, the American company “Apple” announced the suspension of its sales in Turkey on Tuesday, November 23.

The depreciation of the lira

The lira stabilized in trading on Wednesday, November 24, but it suffered a significant decline against the dollar on Tuesday, and the lira fell more than 15% against the dollar at one point.

The Turkish currency has lost more than 47% of its value this year 2021, topping the worst emerging market currencies against the green American currency.

central bank

The Turkish lira continues its losing streak after the country's central bank cut interest rates last week by 100 basis points.

Prices have been reduced by 400 basis points, from 19% to 15% since last September, despite inflation having been at an annual rate of 20% during the month of October.

change policies

Against the background of the continuous interventions by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and his insistence on reducing interest rates, which he sees as “an evil that must be eliminated in order for the economic indicators to improve,” experts.

And opposition parties accused Erdogan of interfering and exerting pressure on the Central Bank to lower interest rates.

President Erdogan has long defended the unorthodox view that interest rate cuts can combat rising inflation, and central banks usually raise interest rates when inflation rises to prevent the economy from overheating.

economic strategy

In a research note, Goldman Sachs strategists Murat Onor and Clemens Graf wrote, “We believe the pressures will not abate until after a change in policy and the key question is whether this will be in a more traditional or unconventional direction.”

But President Erdogan is showing no signs of backing down, and in a speech earlier this week, he defended monetary policy to his government.

Interest rate

Describing it as a "war of independence" in which Turkey will win, he said that low interest rates would reduce inflation and boost production and exports.

“No one should have the slightest doubt that the way to increase employment, which is our priority in our country, is through investment, production, export and growth,” Erdogan wrote on Twitter on Monday evening, November 22.

Apple sales stopped

With the development of the lira's depreciation, Apple Inc. temporarily suspended online sales in Turkey on Tuesday, November 23, especially after the collapse of the currency makes buying imported goods from abroad more expensive for the population.

Turkey's central bank said in a statement that exchange rates are "determined by free market dynamics" and that sales are "unrealistic and completely disconnected" from economic fundamentals.

In the same context, the opposition parties called for early elections, and criticized the government's influence on the central bank policy in Turkey.

Turkish opposition

In light of these developments, Meral Aksener, the leader of one of the opposition parties, said, "The dollar is rising and Mr. Erdogan is talking, inflation is increasing and Mr. Erdogan is talking. Our nation is getting poorer and no matter what you say, no matter what lies you invent, and the truth is clear."

It is a reference to the stifling crises faced by the Turkish people, both in terms of inflation, high prices and the wave of high prices facing the entire population.

Even in terms of investments that escape from the local market, or in terms of unemployment that is exacerbating, in Turkey, which led to turmoil with some small protests in the capital, Ankara and Istanbul.
