Facebook service down

Facebook has apologized, after it stopped working for users around the world for several hours on Monday, October 4, as all of the company's social platforms Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger were down.

What is the problem with Facebook

In short, Facebook's systems stopped talking to the wider Internet. Web infrastructure company Cloudflare explained that it was as if "someone pulled cables from their data centers (Facebook) at once and disconnected them from the Internet."

Facebook interpretation

"Settings changes on the primary routers, which coordinate network traffic between our data centers, caused problems that cut that connection," the company said. This had its effect ... our services were discontinued.”

People not arriving

The Internet is divided into hundreds of thousands of networks. Large companies like Facebook have their own larger networks - known as standalone systems.

When you want to visit Facebook (or WhatsApp or Instagram) your computer must connect to their network, using what is known as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) - a type of online postal service.

Stops and Routes

In order to direct people to the websites they want to visit, BGP searches all available paths through which data can travel and chooses the best route.

On Monday, Facebook abruptly stopped providing the information the system needed to function, meaning that no one's computers had any way to connect to Facebook or its other sites.

Facebook outage effect

The failure of these major online players has had a huge impact on individuals and companies around the world, which is sad to happen with the Facebook group.

Downdetector, which tracks outages in electronic services, said it had reported about 10.6 million problems worldwide, the largest number ever recorded.

For many, losing access to Facebook's services has been an inconvenience, but for some small businesses in the developing world that don't have other reliable ways to connect with customers, it can be a serious problem.

Similarly, some organizations whose employees are still working remotely after the coronavirus pandemic are now relying on WhatsApp to keep colleagues connected.

Facebook what happened

A flurry of reports began around 17:45 KSA on Monday, October 4, that Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram were not working.

At first, this caused the usual jokes about how people were behaving, and ridiculed by competitors like Twitter, but it soon became clear that this was a more serious problem - with reports of chaos at Facebook's California headquarters.

The reason it took so long to fix is because "people trying to figure out what this problem is haven't even been able to actually get into the building," said Shera Frenkel, the New York Times technology reporter, to work out what went wrong.

We don't yet know if the problem was caused by a software bug or a simple human error, however, conspiracy theories are already circulating, including the possibility that the accident was orchestrated by someone inside Facebook.

Facebook management response

Somewhat embarrassingly, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had to turn to rival Twitter to apologize, which is a sad thing to happen with the tech world.

Mike Proulx, an analyst with Forrester Research, says the incident raises questions about the way Facebook has brought so much of its technical operations together in recent years.

He says it made it more efficient, but it means that if something goes wrong, there can be a "cascading effect", and Facebook has had outages before, but they were generally fixed within an hour or so.

Longer and more disruptive outages like this illustrate the problem of concentrating so much of the world's connections in Silicon Valley, which in turn raises questions about whether the Internet's business should be in the hands of a few big companies.

Facebook losing money

Perhaps the biggest problem for Facebook itself is the effect the failure has had on its revenue and stock price. The shutdown resulted in ads not showing for more than 6 hours across its platforms.

According to some, the outage could have caused a loss of up to $6 billion to Zuckerberg's personal fortune, with his stock dropping about 5%.

Others estimate that the company's revenue loss could reach more than $60 million. This blow to Facebook's reputation comes at a difficult time, as a former Facebook employee - who has reported wrongdoing and leaked numerous internal documents - appeared before a US Senate hearing on Tuesday, October 5.

Facebook's future

The social media giant is also under scrutiny by telecom regulators around the world, who question whether it is responding appropriately to issues such as disinformation, hate speech, handling of user data, or whether - as the whistleblower says - it is prioritizing For "profit before safety".

At this moment, with the writing of the article, it is now clear that Facebook's technical capabilities are also questioned as a result of this malfunction, which lasted for hours, which is the fear of the technology world.
