Religious Wars |

Religious Wars

This is a series of religious wars consisting of eight wars . The so-called religious wars took place in France ( from 1562 to 1598), which destroyed and destroyed the Kingdom of France in the second half of the sixteenth century.

These religious wars in France were among the French Catholic and Protestant , and they were called the title Gonotyon , where I started from the beginning of the sixteenth century and the middle of a confrontation between Catholics with Protestants, which led to the devastating civil wars.

Brittany area

In western Brittany in France, when the mysterious glow of a torch of light seemed to dance on the swamp at night, the specter of the Ligures, bandits not representing freedom, who had ravaged the land during religious wars, were said to be.

I do not kill in a discriminatory manner or racist thousands of innocent people and leave in its wake misery unbearable , in some innocent squandered, where the number of population thousand people, and the shrinking number to twelve.

Over the last roughly forty years of the 16th century, France was embroiled in a series of bloody religious wars that pitted the Roman Catholic majority against their Protestant neighbours.

religious wars

The Eight Wars saw many ups and downs as religious liberties were granted , then crushed as powerful families vied for supremacy , sadly marked this time by the most brutal atrocities. The slaughter was almost all too familiar.

The killing spree now known as the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in 1572 saw major Protestant leaders murdered and the five-day outbreak of the killing left 4,000 dead and claimed 10,000 victims.

In addition, by that fall alone , although some estimate the death toll that summer was three times higher, i.e. 12,000 dead.

Religious massacres

Even by the standards of the times, which tolerated the killing of resisting civilians, the level of barbarism shown was extreme, especially considering that this was not an official war , the King's forces and that organized under the banner of the Catholic League were only two of many heroes.

A great deal of pogroms were committed by civilian mobs, sometimes organized into local religious associations whose activities were directed by local figures such as militia leaders or judges.

It is noteworthy that among the approximately sixty massacres recorded between 1559 and 1571 in the History of the Martyrs Jean Crispin (1619).

None of it occurred in Brittany where Protestants were a small minority and its Catholic ruler , the Duke of Étampes, pursued a policy of moderation that generally prevented the outbreak of sectarian violence.

Law collapse

Throughout France, it took advantage of a lot of people, peasants and nobles alike, the breakdown of law and order to settle old accounts or simply to loot and murder with impunity , people took it upon themselves to re - burn at the stake, a punishment that the state applied no longer.

It seems that the practice of mutilating dead bodies was widespread , and in Orange , in 1562 , the naked bodies of women were discovered " with ox horns, stones, or wooden pegs placed in places not mentioned on their bodies ."

Corpses were dehumanized by being covered in filth and droppings and dragged through the streets like animals to pressure the house that these heretics were separated from the divine creation.

Among these acts of corruption, such as tearing off the eyes or cutting off the nose and lips, were justified as acts of mercy aimed at preparing the victims for the torments of Hell.

King Henry III

In 1584, after a few years of turbulent truce, Protestant leader Henry of Navarre became heir to the French throne , and his candidacy was opposed by many Catholic nobles with the full support of the Church.

It is a group that knows Formed On behalf of the Catholic League who immediately lobbied King Henry III in refuting the political situation of the Protestants and giving them six months to choose between acquittal or exile.

While large numbers of Protestants left France, many remained; Relying on the fact that Henry of Navarre remained in control of the southern provinces , the Catholic League's discontent with Henry III's failure to expel the Protestants from France prompted them to dismiss him.

Spain support

A situation that saw the Catholic King Henry III align himself with his Protestant cousin, Henry of Navarre, against the community at the end of 1588, and the situation quickly

escalated into war with the support of the community from Spain and the royalists with the support of England.

The assassination of the League's leader on December 23 , 1588 saw the uprising of the northern provinces that they controlled against Henry III, who was assassinated on August 1 , 1589.

Thus, Henry of Navarre became King Henry IV but his power did not extend to the north and east of the country; So the king had to conquer his new kingdom.

Nantes government

Meanwhile, the Duke of Mercure, who had been appointed by Henry III, his brother-in-law, governor of Brittany in 1582 , was maneuvering to create an independent domain in this powerful Catholic province that had been annexed only by the French crown less than fifty years earlier.

He appointed himself leader of the Catholic League in Brittany, and invoked the hereditary rights of his wife, Duchess of Pentevere, descendant of the Dukes of Brittany and heiress of Blois' claim to the duchy.

A government was set up in Nantes, and an alliance with the King of Spain, who sent thousands of troops to help him.

However, the city of Rennes, home to the Parliament of Brittany, remained loyal to the crown and the king appointed a new ruler, Prince Dombese.

saint's day altars

The bloody year that witnessed the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre also saw the birth of Guy Idir de la Haye de Beaumanoir, Baron de la Fontenelle , a name forever stained with the blood of the innocent and synonymous with slaughter.

Born into a noble family of Breton near Saint-Nicolas-de-Belem in 1572 , he spent his childhood in the family home outside the nearby town of Quentin.

As the second son, he was probably expected to practice in the church or the army, and in 1587 he was sent to study in Paris but within two years he sold his books in order to buy a dagger and a sword.

catholic forces

However, his intention to join the Catholic forces of the Duke of Maine in Orleans was thwarted when he was robbed on his way and this humiliation appears to have prompted him to return to his homeland in Brittany.

La Fontaine now put himself in the service of the Duke of Mercure and gradually gathered around him a group of men that would eventually grow to about 400 passengers and sometimes as many as 2,000 armed men : " A group of adventurers, men of sackcloth and rope.

Of all countries and ready for any task, on condition that the plunder be shared .” Josephine Baudry speaks inLa Fontenelle The League and the Brigade in Lower Brittany (1920) speaks of " groups of men marching without discipline, on the orders of their captains, who waged war on their own account ."

These independent leaders gathered to the headquarters of their party only in important circumstances, when it was necessary to besiege a town or to obtain a position, with the aim of making a useful expedition, prohibited on their own initiative. ”

Rape and torture

In 1590, he looted a castleKersaliou in a Pommerit-Jaudy, which he made his headquarters and from there made several raids through the diocese Treguier, Helped the subsequent seizure of the castlePludual On strengthening his northern base and beginning his terrifying reign.

Where a contemporary account indicated that his forces : " Practiced all the atrocities that they were able to use ropes, iron and fire to manage to ransom the innocent peasant workers and merchants in the country."

The second after he tortured miserably and embarrassed them in order to extort their money , looted and burned their homes and whatever furniture they could not take , but took cattle, even pigs and not content with many assaults, and raped women and girls, regardless of age .”

Complaint against the League of Nations

And encouraged La Fontenelle, and began to raid the settlements in the south, and sacked the townChâteauneuf-du-Faou controlled by the League of Nations.

He told MPs that the town " looted and destroyed , and the killing of our people very violently, with many brazen atrocities committed by he and his men, which was not our enemies , the enemies want to commit ."

After hearing that the townspeople would not file complaints against him at the Assembly of the League of Nations in Vans , La Fontaine stormed a meeting of deputies on March 20 , 1592 , threatening to cut the throats of anyone who might dare speak against him.

Did Mercoeur He was arrested but was soon released on condition that he bring his men to help relieve the clique's stronghold Craon , besieged by a prince Dombes.

Allied success

And succeeded Mercoeur With La Fontenelle Their Spanish allies successfully lifted the siege, routed the besieged, unable to rent any animal carts, and forced to abandon supplies, ammunition, and artillery.

However, after all this event, many in the French camp began to worry that the Spaniards were behaving like conquistadors, refusing to recognize any authority other than their own.

Later that year, under the leadership of Mercoeur , partner La Fontenelle In the dismissal of the North Coast city Treguier and capture the castle Coatfrec strong in Ploubezre But his efforts to seize the city Guingamp been repelled.

King's forces

Thereupon the king's forces succeeded in besieging his hideout at Cotfrique during the following spring After he surrendered the castle, La Fontaine's life was spared on the condition that he accept deportation from Brittany; The conditions he accepted but had no intention of honoring them.

Instead, in May 1593 , he moved to the town of Karaikes 50 km south and established his new garrison at St Tremore's Church, whose high tower provided him with a commanding observatory.

Although it can not be seen from Carhaix , he threw La Fontenelle Now look at the castle Granec , one of the newest and richest castles in Brittany, only 13 km to the west.

The castle was owned by a prominent supporter of the League, and Lafontaine knew that he was not strong enough to take it by force and so he adopted a ploy; He had some of his men pretending to be reinforcements sent by a governorMorlaix To help defend the castle.

Castle siege

A ruse was worked where the drawbridge opened and the castle was gained without a shot being fired in early July , in support of their deposed master, and the surrounding parish peasants took advantage of La Fontaine's absence to have a Morlex raid and besieged the castle.

Nevertheless, just before dawn on the eighth day, La Fontaine and about sixty passengers disembarked on the fortifications , poorly built and guarded; A massacre followed, and Canon Jean Moreau says in his memoirs of the League wars in Brittany (1836) that he " perpetrated a massacre of up to eight hundred and more."

We do not stop chasing and killing them for more than an hour , he says, " but he is not satisfied with this massacre, as La Fontaine decided to insult the dead by depriving them of the blessing of a Christian burial.

Barbaric cruelty in murder

According to Moreau : " The cruelty of this barbarian was so great that he did not allow the relatives of the dead to come and collect their bodies and identify their dead , he guarded them at night to prevent anyone from performing the last rites so that they would remain corrupt on the face of the earth ."

One day, while walking in the halls of the castle, a visiting lord asked Pratmariah La Fontenelle: How can you stand the stench of those rotting corpses? He replied that the smell of dead enemies is very sweet.

Where it was really a pity to see these poor people being slaughtered, who were spoiled and were eaten by dogs and wolves because if any relatives came at night to take the body of a loved one, they would themselves be killed on the spot."

Religious mission and the capture of the castle

With nearly a thousand soldiers, La Fontaine reinforced the defenses of the Granique with larger dikes of firm ground, rocks, and logs , from this bunker, and devastated vast swaths of western Brittany.

Where he now went any claim the existence of a religious mission , it has become a wolf Alprliz, renowned and feared throughout the land for aversive and ruthlessness.

Having captured the castle at Corlay at the end of 1593 , the towns of Chateaulain, Landernau, Le Vaux, Le Cronan, Morlex, Quentin, and the suburbs of Quimper felt the wrath of his raids; Even the Langonet Monastery was looted.

Tired of his excesses, the Duke seized Mercoeur on a castle Granec and destroyed it in 1594 , butLa Fontenelle He simply permanently transformed his base of operations into Corlay.

And it was here, in June of that year, that he was wounded when part of the first floor collapsed; He broke his leg and kept a visible limp for the rest of his life.

Fortification of the island of Brittany

In early 1595 , King Corlay's forces besieged, and La Fontaine hoped to hold out until the arrival of a Spanish relief force, but surrendered a month later and managed to make his way 40 km south to Brysiac where he immediately stole two of the neighborhood's castles.

In his quest for a stronger base, he put La Fontenelle His sights are on Ile Tristan, a small island located 500 meters from the port of Dornese on the western coast that can only be reached at low tide.

On May 15 , 1595 he attacked and captured the governor of the island as well as a number of wealthy merchants who were later released for high ransoms.

Having sacked and plundered the Dornese, these inhabitants, who were still alive, had to demolish the town's houses to use the stone to fortify the island and garrison more than 700 men.

Army of peasants

Due to the desolation of La Fontenelle, the inhabitants of the neighboring parishes pleaded with the local lord for help and duly assembled a force of nearly 2,000 men, mostly farmworkers and laborers with no military experience.

Unfortunately, the result was unexpected , launchedLa Fontenelle , accompanied by 400 knights, immediately went to confront the peasant army, killing nearly 1,500 of them and capturing the CountGranec He was released for a large ransom.

La Fontaine turned his attention now to the thriving town of Penmarkt on the south coast , and at that time a thriving place, described as "the richest region in Brittany " , he was able to muster 2,500 ventilators and was proactive in preparing to confront La Fontaine's designs.

Execution of detainees

where the townspeople executed two defensive strongholds; One of them is in a churchTréoultré, the other in a building inKerity , both surrounded by fortifications and parapets , in a gesture of unbelievable gullibility, allowed the city toLa Fontenelle Enter under the flag of friendship.

After carefully observing the inner defenses of the city, he quickly returned and plundered the city, killing more than 3,000 residents, although one contemporary put the number closer to 5,000, and all accounts agree that the most horrific massacre occurred inside the church.

In this praise the then Governor of Brest remarked that, after he had taken Panama : " La Fontaineelle has shamed all the women and girls, from the age of seventeen, whom he killed , in agony.

And also, more than 5,000 peasants who set fire to more than 2,000 houses, looted and carried away all the furniture, of any kind.”

To bring in this enormous booty, La Fontaine captured the boats moored in the harbour; About 300 ships of all sizes were loaded with the city's wealth and carried around the coast to Il Tristan.

warships

The best of these ships later formed his naval power and allowed him to exercise his scourge at sea as effectively as he did on land . In September 1595, the inhabitants learnedPont-Croix , which is an important regional center, that La Fontenelle He threw his designs on them.

With no walls to defend it, the people decided to fortify the strongest building in the city, the Church, which most of them withdrew to.

Unfortunately, their makeshift barricades and trenches were quickly overcome by the bandits who turned their full attention to the church, which eventually fell upon them a few hours later.

The people who had taken refuge in the church did not have enough ammunition to keep many of the attackers in trouble, and so, under the command of Captain Villero, they withdrew to the tower.

Hanging and humiliating murder

After seeing a wave after wave of attacks repulsed, he decided not to burn Fontainal defenders but did not ease the fire and smoke from their resolve , finally, I swear oath that their lives will survive if they left the tower and left the spoils of the city gathered there for his men.

The apologists accepted his terms, but since the latter had reclaimed the church floor, La Fontaine immediately ordered " that they should be hanged at once, but before the order was carried out, he wanted his cruel betrayal to be accompanied by an act of unparalleled, most let down and reprimand." from its predecessors.

Which caused his soldiers to violate publicly and in the middle of the street, in front of her husband Philiroth, Mrs. Kerbullic" , It said that about 3,000 people have been killed in the city and surrounding fields after that afternoon, but the atrocities committed by the Afontainal after the Pont massacre Croix it almost defies description.

Brutal torture in prisons

Cannon Moreau noted that " this disgraceful violence in the person of the bridesmaid had the husband and a few others executed , and the rest of those who fell into his hands were killed or captured at El Tristan, where their condition was much worse than if they had been killed like the others."

Some died miserably in cells and filthy toilets, and after countless tortures to which they were subjected every day, which made them sit sometimes on tripods, which led to them being burned to the bone, sometimes in the heart of winter and in the greatest cold, and laid bare inside tubes filled with with frozen water.

And those who had some means to pay the ransom he demanded, and yet were abroad, could hardly live for the great torment they endured.

Death on the offal and the belly of the fish

So few escaped him that they would not die in prison if they remained there three or four days, for they were so compressed in numbers that they could not move and had nothing else to do but lie on their stools, where they often soaked on the knees.

Her second visit was the burial after his death from the belly of the fish . As soon as they died, their fellow prisoners were ordered to throw them into the sea, if it was better not to leave the bodies to rot among them.”

Sometime in 1595 , La Fontaine contacted Lord Mizarnaud at his castle in Blonventer, and this visit is said to have ended somewhat unconventionally with the kidnapping of his ten-year-old daughter-in-law, a very wealthy heiress named Marie Le Chevoir de Quadzlan.

Quimper

In October 1595 , La Fontaineille made plans to capture the southern port city of Quimper, but the king's forces captured it.

Believing that the absence of their leader's talisman might weaken the resolve of his men, King Ile's forces besieged Tristan but met with resolute resistance, and the siege was abandoned after only six weeks.

Released for ransom at the end of April 1596 , La Fontaine returned to his fort on the island, married his captive heir on her eleventh birthday and resumed his plundering activities.

On May 16 , the day of the May Fair, festivities in the north coast town of Lanyon were shattered with the appearance of La Fontenelle and seventy armed passengers "who caused great damage and destroyed a large part of the city."

This beautiful city of Quimper was once plundered four times during the Wars of Religion : in 1590 by the Duke of Mercure, by La Fontaine in 1593 and 1596 , and finally in 1598 by the king's forces.

Bandits and blood

It seems that the desire of bandits, blood and plunder was matched only by his ambition. In 1597 , he attempted to seize the port of Brest with seven warships and twice tried to capture Quimper.

With his second attack, a land and amphibious operation, it would have succeeded if his men had kept their nerve.

By the time the blood dried up on his sack to Plomelo at the end of October 1597 , the broader political situation changed markedly in Brittany.

After restore Amiens From the Spanish forces at the end of September 1597 , King Henry IV, now an emphatic Catholic, turned to the situation in Brittany and led his army againstMercoeur In early 1598.

Spanish support ends

With Spanish support almost completely gone, Mercure surrendered before the King on March 20 , 1598 , the last League leader to do so.

With peace assured, the king triumphantly entered Nantes where on April 30 ,1598 he issued the Edict of Nantes, guaranteeing Protestants a limited measure of civil tolerance for worship.

In one of the provisions of the decree, he ordered " that the memory of everything that happened between one side and the other should remain broken and suppressed as if it had never happened."

To me La Fontenelle, can not be peace between Mercoeur the king is more generous; He and his men were acquitted of their crimes, his debts were cancelled, and he received a monetary reward in recognition of his service as well as for the position of Governor of El Tristan.

Dismantling the fort

However, the fort on the island was dismantled by order of the king in 1599 and La Fontaine returned to the family estates near Quentin with his child bride.

His quiet life as a country retreat was interrupted by accusations of participating in the intrigues of the Duke of Perón with the Spaniards and of conspiring to sell them El Tristan .

He was arrested in El Brihat, and imprisoned in Paris, but then King Henry IV pardoned him , as soon as the ink dried on his release papers until the family of Villerouault Complained about the murders in Pont-Croix.

The Paris Parliament was persuaded to look again at his dealings with the Spaniards, but without convincing evidence, he invoked his previous crimes.

Crimes against humanity

And he was re - arrested on 10 September / September, along with the kidnapping of Mary Lou Hevoar, and charged it with rape overt wife Vileiro, in the presence of her husband and the last hanged in front of the eyes of his wife.

Evidence was also heard that it caused the deaths of two prisoners; One starves to death and the other is force-fed from the excrement, just to test who will be the first to die.

Death sentence

He was convicted of the crime of insulting the royal ego and " conspiracies, treason and projects against the king, his state and the public interest ", on September 27 , 1602 , after they were asked to torture in the initial question, to convict any accomplices before the execution.

Then the executioner was beheaded, which was returned to Brittany and displayed in Porte Toussaint In Rennes until his head was stolen on November 8 by unknown friends , his foul memory, fueled by his horrific and brutal exploits , will long remain in the French popular imagination.
