Talut and Goliath

Talut and Goliath
A scene of the boy David with Goliath

A strange story that happened after the Prophet Moses with the people of the Children of Israel, where they wanted to fight, and it is a strange army.

Which went out to war, full of enthusiasm and courage, but most of the soldiers of the army do not obey their leader when he commands them and he is Taloot.

The army is on the verge of defeat in front of the power of the enemy and its mighty leader, Goliath, and if it were not for the appearance of a believing boy, the Prophet David.

And eliminating the leader of the enemy’s army in an easy way, which astonished the two armies, what is this story?

The children of Israel lost in the desert

The story begins when the Prophet Moses - peace be upon him - asked his people, the Children of Israel: to enter the land of Palestine.

And they refused and refused, despite knowing that this was inspired by God - the Almighty - so God punished them by wandering in the Sinai desert in Egypt for forty years.

Most of them perished, and the Prophet Musa - peace be upon him - died during this period, and another prophet sent by God to them came after him.

And the new generation had known the mistake their parents had made, so they obeyed the new prophet, who also commanded them to enter the land of Palestine in implementation of the command of God.

They entered the land of Palestine, and defeated the Palestinians, who at that time were infidels so powerful, that they were called "the mighty ones."

Revenge of the people of Palestine

The Children of Israel lived for a period of happiness and comfort, then they were deceived by their worldly desires, and they preferred and became corrupt.

And they killed many of them, kidnapped their sons, and seized the ark (and the ark is a box containing some tablets of the Torah and the staff of Moses, and some special things of the Prophet Moses and his brother Aaron).

The Children of Israel were blessed with this ark, and they were optimistic about victory if it was with them, so when the mighty did that to them, the Children of Israel felt humiliation, distress, homelessness and loss.

The decision to return and take revenge

And their leaders decided to go to their prophet, whom God had sent to them at that time, to complain to him about their situation, and God used to send a prophet to them every period to guide them to the truth and forbid them from corruption.

The elders of the Children of Israel said to their Prophet: We have been expelled from our homes, our men have been killed, our sons have been taken prisoner, and we have become extremely humiliated and humiliated.

Then their prophet, who knew their love for the world and their lack of patience for the hardship of jihad, said to them: I am afraid that I will ask God for that, then you will refrain from fighting and flee from it.

King Talut

The elders of the Children of Israel said: Trust that we will fight, and how can we not strive and fight our enemies who expelled us and captured our children? Their prophet believed what they said, so he prayed to God, and God answered his prayer.

So the Prophet gathered the Children of Israel and said to them: {God has sent you Taloot as an angel} [Al-Baqarah: 247]; To lead you to fight in the cause of God, and enter the land of Palestine.

And take back what was taken from you, so the elders of the Children of Israel said in distress and anger: How can Talut be the king, when he is nothing but a poor man? We are more deserving of the king than him; Because we are rich.

And they went claiming the Children of Israel objecting to the command of God, and arguing with their prophet, so their prophet said to them: God is the one who chose him, and granted him an increase in knowledge and strength, and God does what He wills.

Guide and coffin

However, they were not convinced, and they asked their Prophet for evidence of the truthfulness of his words, so he said to them: The sign of God’s choice to Talut is that the ark that your enemies seized will return to you, carried by the angels while you look on.

Indeed, after a short period of time, God sent a group of angels carrying the coffin, and they saw the coffin returning to them, nothing was missing from it, so they rejoiced, and they were satisfied that Talut would be king over them.

So Talut began preparing the army, and the Children of Israel were eager to fight, and the number of the army became great, but Talut was not deceived by their enthusiasm, nor by their abundance.

river test

Taloot knows that these things are easy in a time of prosperity, and he told them before the army moved: God will test you and test you with a river on the way, so whoever drinks from it.

He is neither obedient to God nor to me, and whoever does not drink from it, he is obedient to his Lord and then to me, except for the one who takes a room with his hand, meaning that he allowed his soldiers to drink only what wets their saliva.

Talut wanted to know the extent of their obedience to him, and their commitment to his orders, so that the army would not become chaos after that, and he also knew that a soldier who did not obey his commander could be a cause of defeat.

Soldiers drink from the river

When Talut's army reached the river, the soldiers drank a lot of water, violating Talut's orders, except for a few of them.

And they saw the army of their infidel enemy Goliath, huge and mighty. The soldiers of Talut were afraid, and some of them said in fear: We have no ability to fight this mighty and powerful army, we are few.

Some believers who trust in God replied to them: Victory is not only by numbers and weapons, and how many a small group has defeated a large group, God willing, and God helps the patient believers.

The army is falling

God is with us, and he must help us if we are patient, and then the soldiers were encouraged, and they raised their hands praying to God to grant them patience and steadfastness, and victory over the unbelievers.

And the battle began, and the strength of Goliath and his army appeared, and the martyrs began to fall from the small army of Talut, and his army was almost defeated, had it not been that Goliath was deceived by his strength, and wanted to end the battle quickly.

So he advanced to a visible place, and Taloot called out, saying: Go out for me, or bring out whomever you want to fight me.

Talut asked his soldiers to let one of them go out to fight Goliath, but none of them came out, because they were all afraid of Goliath, who had not been defeated by anyone before, but a young boy named David, was in Talut's army and had strong faith in God, and confidence in his victory.

David's boy

So this boy came to King Talut, and asked him for permission to fight Goliath, so Talut rejoiced with David, and promised him a great reward if he succeeded in killing Goliath, then gave him a mare and a sword.

But the boy David had nothing but a slingshot (like a arrow, used to throw stones), but David told him that he was confident of God’s victory for him, without a horse or a sword, and David was good at using a slingshot.

So David went out to Goliath with his slingshot and the stones in it, and when Goliath saw him, he underestimated him, and said: Go back, for you are young, and I do not like to kill you.

Goliath was killed and the army was victorious

David said to the arrogant Goliath in a strong voice: Rather, I will kill you, enemy of God, God willing, and Goliath said, and he was angry with David, the bold and brave: Do you kill me with this sling as dogs are killed? David said confidently: Yes.

Then he turned his slingshot in the air with his hand, and with a lightning speed the stones came out of his slingshot and came between Goliath's eyes, and he fell from his horse, and David rushed to him and cut off his head.

At that time, Goliath's army felt very terrified, and fled defeated, and thus the believer's army of Talut won over its enemy by the grace of God, and then thanks to the wise leadership of Talut.

And let us not forget the great bravery of David, for which he later deserved the honor of God. Where God chose him after that to be a prophet and king over the Children of Israel.
