September attacks
The moment the plane crashes

The September 11 attacks, often referred to as 9/11, were historical moments of the 21st century.

It is a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by a radical Islamic terrorist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda against the United States of America, using civilian aircraft, on the morning of Tuesday 11 September 2001.

Tuesday morning

That morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four civilian commercial airliners traveling from the northeastern United States to California, midway through that flight.

The hijackers were organized into three groups of five hijackers and one group of four, and each group had one hijacker who received flight training and took control of the plane.

Their apparent goal was for each aircraft to collide with a prominent American building, causing mass casualties and partial or complete destruction of the targeted buildings.

first plane

The first plane to hit its target was American Airlines Flight 11, and it was flown to the North Tower with the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan at 8:46 AM.

Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., the South Tower into the World Trade Center was hit with United Flight 175.

second plane

At this point, both 110-story towers collapsed within an hour and forty-two minutes, collapsing other World Trade Center structures including the World Trade Center, and causing significant damage to the surrounding buildings.

third plane

And then a third flight, American Airlines Flight 77, was hijacked from Dulles International Airport, over Ohio.

At 9:37 a.m., the U.S. Department of Defense crashed into the West Side of the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, causing a partial collapse of the side of the building.

fourth plane

The fourth and final flight, United Airlines Flight 93, was flown toward Washington, D.C. It was the target of the White House.

But this flight was the only plane that did not hit its intended target, and instead crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m.

As the passengers of the last flight tried to regain control of the plane away from the hijackers.

And eventually diverted the flight from its intended target, investigators determined that the target of the last flight 93 was either the White House or the US Capitol (Congress).

Al-Qaida organization

In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, suspicion soon turned to Al-Qaeda, as the United States formally responded by launching the War on Terror and invading Afghanistan to bring down the Taliban.

Which did not comply with US demands to expel al-Qaeda from Afghanistan and hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, although bin Laden initially denied any involvement, but officially claimed in 2004 responsibility for the attacks.

Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited US support for Israel, the presence of US forces in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives.

World Trade Center

After evading captivity for nearly a decade, bin Laden was located in a bunker in Abbottabad, Pakistan and was later killed during Operation Neptune Spear.

The destruction of the World Trade Center and adjacent infrastructure seriously damaged the economy of New York City and created a global economic recession.

At the same time, many countries have strengthened their own anti-terror legislation and expanded the powers of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to prevent terrorist attacks.

The civilian airspace of the United States and Canada was closed until September 13, while Wall Street trading was closed until September 17.

Numerous closures, evictions and cancellations followed, out of respect or fear of further attacks. The clean-up of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002.

Repair of buildings and victims

The Pentagon was repaired within a year, construction to replace the World Trade Center complex began in November 2006, and the building opened in November 2014.

The attacks resulted in 2,977 deaths, more than 25,000 injuries, and serious long-term health consequences, as well as at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.

Memory of attacks and fraud

It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the deadliest incident with firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the USA, with 340 and 72 killed, respectively.

It is where many memorials have been built, including the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.

He also placed the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, and the National Memorial to Flight 93 at the crash site in Pennsylvania.
