Job and quitting relationship

Job and quitting relationship
A job in the time of Corona

Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, a large number of employees have resigned or changed jobs, and they see employers playing a role in some employees leaving their jobs.

When the Corona epidemic appeared, Melissa Villareal was teaching history to middle school students at a private school in an upscale California neighborhood.

Melissa loved this job and this field, but now, after more than a year, she left the field of teaching and changed the field of industrial design in a major beauty company.

leave the job

There are many like Melissa who are leaving their jobs or considering it in droves, and a survey conducted by Microsoft of more than 30,000 workers globally showed that 41% of workers were considering leaving or changing careers this year.

A study by Persono to HR Software on workers in the UK and Ireland showed that 38% of those surveyed planned to quit their job within a period ranging from six months to a year.

In the United States of America alone, last April saw more than four million people quit their jobs, according to a summary from the Department of Labor, the largest rise in the number of quits ever.

Reasons for leaving the job

There are a number of reasons why people seek change, in what some call “big resignations,” and for some, the coronavirus pandemic has caused a shift in priorities.

He encouraged them to pursue their "dream job," or move to work from home, but for many, the decision to quit came as a result of the way their employers have treated them during the pandemic.

Such was the case with Melissa, who found herself back in the classroom after a short closure, so she was back in school long before public schools.

Melissa was concerned about her safety, and the pressures and workloads of her having to teach online and distance education at the same time increased, and she felt that her concerns were not addressed or even listened to.

In the end, Melissa decided to quit and start over in an entirely new industry rather than stay in a job where she feels she is undervalued.

Job Style

Melissa pointed out that this decision was very difficult, because “there is a feeling of guilt as a teacher, you do not want to leave your students, but it became very clear that it is not about my health.

Or the health of the children, or the mental well-being of anyone, but a business that cares in the first place By raising the money, the epidemic has lifted this veil from my eyes.”

Workers prefer to leave employers who do not support them and move to jobs where they feel they have better resources and enjoy greater patronage.

Primarily, workers make decisions to leave based on the way their employers treat them during the pandemic. In the end, workers stayed at the companies that supported them, and left those that did not.

Workers who, before the pandemic, were considering leaving companies with poor work cultures, have been pushed by the pandemic to make a critical decision about leaving and reaching the point of no return.

This is because, as evidenced by a recent study by Stanford University, many of these companies with poor work environments have doubled down on their unsupportive decisions, such as layoffs (whereas, on the contrary, companies with good culture tend to treat employees Well).

Even disgruntled workers who survived the layoffs felt they had to leave because they saw clearly that they were working in unsupportive environments.

Corona pandemic effect

“Our data over the years has always shown that what people care most about is how companies treat their employees,” says Alison Omens, chief strategy officer at research firm Ghost Capital.

Noting that this is measured through multiple metrics, including wages, benefits, security, advancement opportunities, safety, and a commitment to equality.

In the wake of the pandemic, Omens adds, “people are expecting more from the companies they work for. The early days of the pandemic reminded us that people are not machines.

If you worry about your kids, about your health, about your financial insecurity and about being able to pay your bills, all the things that come with being human, that will probably make you unproductive, and of course, we were all worried about those things.”

Workers would expect employers to take steps to help reduce, or at least acknowledge, these concerns, and so companies that failed to do so naturally suffered.

Work-life balance

The Personio study also showed that more than half of the study participants who were planning to quit wanted to do so because of diminished benefits, work-life balance or a "toxic" workplace culture.

“For just about everyone, the pandemic has been very focused on the way companies deal with the workers who have given them so much and how much they care about how they treat them, their health or their happiness during these difficult times,” says Ross Seychelles, Personnel Chief Officer at Personeo.

Seychelles notes that many workers who asked this question did not find satisfactory answers. "I've heard this sentence a lot: I will go to a place that appreciates me," he adds.

During the pandemic, many essential, low-paid workers were fatigued and quit after employers treated them poorly.

turnover leave work

There is what can be described as the theory of “mass displacement” at all levels of work, and this is particularly evident in service delivery and retail jobs.

“Many of the stories in this regard tend to focus on office and administrative jobs or whatever,” Omens says There are white-collar jobs, but more so for traditional, low-wage jobs and essential workers. That's a really interesting element about that."

The retail sector in the United States of America witnessed more resignations recently than any other sector, as the month of April witnessed the resignation of about 650,000 retail workers, according to data from the Department of Labor.

Throughout the pandemic, essential workers, who often work in low-paid jobs, bore the brunt of employer decisions, with many working longer hours in fewer teams, and in jobs that required direct interaction with the public with little, or no, safety measures put in place by the company,

And with no guarantee of paid sick leave, at least in the US. Consequently, the workers soon felt unable to continue working under these difficult conditions.

pay raise system

Big retail companies are scrambling to fill vacancies, and are finding it hard to find enough new workers willing to work.

Therefore, some companies, such as Target and Best Buy, have decided to raise wages, while others such as McDonald's and Amazon offer hiring bonuses ranging from $200 to $1,000.

However, a survey conducted by the research firm Korn Ferry found that 94 percent of retail businesses had trouble finding new workers for job openings.

It's not just about the money, Omnes says. "When we ask people if they'd accept a pay cut in exchange for working for a company that aligns with their values, they agree."

Could so many resignations lead to a long-term change in workplace culture and the way companies invest in their employees?

Omens believes the answer is yes, and points out that change was already happening before the pandemic, with "a real increase in what people are looking for in terms of their expectations from CEOs and companies."
