Psychology, ancient and modern, was viewed as a study of human behavior in terms of emotions and feelings inside and outside it and its relationship with factors and variables in this universe, mind and brain, and how to make a person more tolerant and happy and solve some of these diseases that afflict humans.

Where these psychological problems appeared in most civilizations and eras, including the Greek, Roman, Islamic and modern eras, represented by most of the contemporary scholars such.

As Sigmund Freud and others, and the emergence of forms and schools in most countries of the world Australia, Canada, the United States of America, Britain, France and Japan.

What is psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behavior, according to the American Psychological Association, as psychology is a multifaceted discipline.

And includes many sub-fields of study such as the areas of human development, sports, health, clinical and social behavior, cognitive processes, and cognitive behavior.

But if we look at psychology we find that it is a new science, as most of the developments in history took place over the past 150 years or so. However, the origins of psychology can be traced back to ancient Greece, 400 - 500 BC.

Greek philosophy

The focus in psychology was philosophical, as it influenced thinkers and scholars such as Socrates (470 BC - 399 BC) and also Plato (428/427 BC - 348/347 BC), who in turn also influenced Aristotle (384 BC). - 322 BC).

The philosophers of ancient Greece used to discuss many of the topics that modern psychology now studies, such as memory, will versus determinism, nature versus nurture, attractiveness, and other topics.

Beginning of psychology

Beginning of Modern Psychology in the Early Days With the mid-19th century there were two dominant theoretical perspectives regarding how the brain and mind function, structural and functional.

Where structuralism was the beginning is the name given to the approach invented by the scientist Wilhelm Wendt in (1832-1920), which focused on breaking down mental processes at the forefront of the basic components.

The term then originated from Edward Titchener, an American psychologist who was trained by the Wundt Center. Wundt was significant because.

He separated psychology from philosophy by analyzing the way the mind works in a more structured way, focusing on measurement and control through clinical sessions.

Structuralism relied on trained introspection, which is a research method through which topics are linked to what was on their minds while performing a specific behavioral task.

Introspection has proven to be an unreliable method because there are many individual differences in the subjects' experiences and reports.

Despite the failure of introspection, Wundt is such an important figure in the history of psychology that he opened his first laboratory dedicated to psychology in 1879, and its opening is usually seen as a beginning in the methodology of modern experimental psychology.

development of psychology

An American psychologist named William James (1842-1910) developed an approach that became known as functionalism, which is inconsistent with the focus of structuralism.

Scientist James argued that the mind is constantly changing and that it is futile to search for the structure of conscious experience. Instead, he proposed that the focus should be on how and why an organism does something, i.e. mental functions or brain functions.

James suggested that psychologists should search for the underlying cause of behavior and the mental processes involved. This focus on the causes and consequences of behavior has influenced modern psychology.

Psychology Perspectives

Structuralism and functionalism have been replaced by many of the dominant and influential approaches in psychology, each supported with a common set of hypotheses about what people are like, what is important to study and how to research.

Psychoanalysis, founded by Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), was the dominant paradigm in psychology during the early twentieth century. Freud believed that people could be cured by making their unconscious thoughts and impulses conscious, thus gaining insight and happiness.

Psychoanalysis of the scientist Sigmund Freud was the original psychodynamic theory, but the psychodynamic approach as a whole includes all the theories that were based on his ideas, for example, Jung (1964), Adler (1927) and Erikson (1950).

Contemporary classical perspectives in psychology were the behaviorists, who were famous for their reliance on controlled laboratory experiments and the rejection of any unseen or unconscious forces in behavior problems.

As the humanistic approach became the "third force" in psychology and suggested the importance of subjective experience and personal growth.

During the sixties and seventies of the last century, psychology began a great knowledge revolution, adopting a scientific and laboratory-based approach with its application to memory, cognition, cognitive development and mental illness.

Psychology goals

the description

Describing the behavior or perception of human movements is the primary goal of psychology, this can enable researchers to develop general laws of human behavior, and Ivan Pavlov helped develop the laws of learning known as classical conditioning theory.

Explanation

Once researchers have described the behavior of general laws, the next step is to explain how and why this behavior trend occurs. Psychologists will propose theories that can explain the behavior.

Forecasting

Psychology aims to be able to predict future behavior through the results of empirical research, the study of behavior, and if the prediction is not confirmed, the interpretation on which it is based may need to be revised.

For example, classical conditioning predicts that if a person associates a negative outcome with a stimulus, he or she may develop a phobia or aversion to the stimulus.

Change

Psychology describes behavior, explains and makes predictions about behavior, behavior change can be attempted As or controlled, for example.

Interventions based on classical conditioning, such as systematic desensitization, have been used to treat people with anxiety disorders including psychophobia.

Critical evaluation

Cohen (1962) believes that the field of study cannot be considered a legitimate science in itself, unless most of its followers share a common perspective or paradigm.

The scientist Kuhn thinks psychology is still a paradigm science, while others believe that it has already experienced major scientific revolutions.

(Wundt structuralism has been replaced by Watson behaviorism, in turn, with information processing approaches), and the crucial point here is: Can psychology be considered a science if it differs Psychologists about what to study and how to study it?

Psychology Perspectives

There are areas and branches in the field of psychology, including: behaviourism, dynamic approach, humanistic approach, cognitive psychology, biological approach, Milgram study.

Zimbardo prison study, Pavlov's dogs, debates in psychology, temperament versus naturalization, free will versus determinism and totalitarian reduction.
