The rescue authorities in the State of Israel said early last Friday that the death toll in the stampede in the north of the country rose to 44, and 200 people were injured.

Media reports said at first that part of the stadium seats collapsed during the religious celebration of Lac Bouomer on Mount Meron in the Galilee region.

And there are officials who said later that it appears that the dead died as a result of suffocation or being crushed underfoot during a stampede, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a "great disaster."

Sad incident

A spokesperson for the Magen David Adom rescue organization described the matter as "an unimaginable disaster."

A Magen David Adom spokesman said, "We have counted 38 dead people at the scene, but there are others dead in the hospital," while a source at Ziv Hospital.

One of the medical centers to which the victims were transferred, said that the hospital received 6 bodies, raising the temporary total. For victims of the disaster, at least 44 dead.

Rescue workers said that more than 100 other people were injured and that many of them were life threatening.

Road close

The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, some of them using helicopters, and the police closed the road leading to the scene of the accident while making efforts to clear the area, and the army also deployed soldiers at the scene.

The Israeli media circulated horrific pictures of the accident, one of which showed more than ten bodies, all of them lined up on the ground and wrapped in plastic sheets.
