Video meetings affect health

Video meetings affect health
Study video meetings

A study showed that meetings with video technology are more stressful than direct meetings, and women suffer more from stress and tension because of them than men. Why?

Since the outbreak of the new Corona epidemic, many people have spent much time in front of the cameras of computers and smart phones to attend business meetings, educational lessons or workshops, as meetings with video technology due to Corona changed the world of work, school and private life.

Disadvantages of video technologies

Although this technology has many advantages, especially in light of the pandemic and the need to work from home or to ensure that there is no mixing with a large number of people, this is not without its drawbacks and harms, according to a study the results of which were reported by the German newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung".

Researcher Geoffrey Hancock, Professor of Communication Sciences at Stanford University, conducted research with his team with interviews with more than ten thousand about their experiences with “Zoom”, “Teams” and “Skype” and other applications, and the main result of the study was that videoconferencing is more stressful than Meetings that participants attend and speak face to face.

This study showed that the main reason for boredom and fatigue caused by the video is that the participants see themselves all the time during a virtual meeting. In order to know the annoying factor accurately, the researchers developed a scale for the psychological effects of Internet conferences and began a study on the topic in February and March 2021, that included various countries of the world.

Fatigue between men and women

This study, the results of which were recently published, showed that women suffer from stress more than men because of the videoconferencing technique, and one in seven women expressed that they feel “severe” to “very severe” after video conferences, and the number of men who suffer from the same symptoms was Their percentage is one in twenty men.

Where scientists have interpreted this with what social psychologists call “self-centered attention”, and because one sees himself constantly during video conferences, this causes multiple self-reflections that can cause tension, in addition to the fear of leaving a bad impression visually and verbally.

Previous studies have shown that women are more likely to look at themselves in the mirror and assess the extent of their influence on others, and in general women are more interested in their image than men.
