It was originally called (International Working Women's Day) before the United Nations officially adopted it on March 8, 1975, with the current name International Women's Day.

Thought development

How did the idea of International Women's Day evolve and this day became a global date with activities that mention the rights of women in the world and demand their equality with men in society and their empowerment.

It is difficult to determine the roots of International Women's Day, but it is proven that its idea coincided with the activities of the labor movements, especially of women at the beginning of the twentieth century in North America, especially in the United States of America and some European countries.

Communist parties

Some sources say that this celebration of this day came after the establishment of institutions equivalent to the Communist Parties in the holding of the first conference of the International Women's Democratic Union in Paris in 1945.

However, most sources indicate that this day is connected with the beginnings of the working women movement in the United States of America, when many women took to the streets of New York in 1865 to protest against working conditions and wages.

Despite the strong handling of the American police with the women demonstrators, textile workers repeated their demonstrations on March 8 - 1908, carrying dry bread and roses, in a symbolic move to demand a reduction in working hours, raising wages for women, stopping child labor, and granting women the right to vote and vote.

Election and voting

This march and movement was the beginning of the so-called feminist movement in the United States of America after middle-class women joined the wave of demands for equal rights, including political rights and representation in the state.

The women of European countries were on the same date in their movement to express their demands to improve the conditions of women and work and remove injustice from them. An international conference for women was organized in August of 1910 in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, in which 100 women from 17 different countries participated.

This is just before the launch of the Second Conference of International Socialist Thought, whose agenda was to discuss the affairs of working women, an initiative of the German socialist activist Clara Zetkin. The proposal to celebrate the International Day of Working Women, which was limited to Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria, was approved on March 19, starting in 1911.

Women against war

In 1913, Russian women celebrated the first Women's Day in the framework of the peace movement and on the last Sunday of February, they demonstrated against the First World War. Russian women began celebrating International Women's Day on the first day of February.

In 1917, feminist protests erupted in Russia for "bread and peace" due to the circumstances of the First World War. The date of the celebration on Women's Day was changed to March 8, when the interim government approved the right of Russian women to vote.

In 1975 and during the International Year of Women, the United Nations began to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, so that this date every year becomes the Women's Day adopted in many countries of the world.
